The Brother Rabbit pattern is also known as Brer Rabbit, as William Morris was inspired by Joel Chandler Harris' newly-published Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (a favorite of the Morris family) as well as a 17th-century Italian silk. One of the few patterns William Morris designed specifically to be printed on cotton, this chintz pattern features a woodland scene of birds and marvelous rabbits who seem to be as full of character as that trickster Brer Rabbit himself. Morris ingeniously sparked the formal Renaissance forms of the Italian silk with the warmth, wit, and humor of the the Brer Rabbit, and in doing so created one of his most beloved and enduring designs. This has practical applications as well, making this pattern appropriate for formal dinners and casual dining.
Brother Rabbit by William Morris, designed for cotton furnishing fabrics, 1882, England, Arts and Crafts Movement. White figural pattern of rabbits, birds, trees, and woodland vegetation on a background of oasis blue. Lovingly hand restored by a professional graphic artist experienced in art restoration.
Please keep in mind the original piece is over a century old and was hand printed from a hand-carved woodblock, so there are tiny variations in the pattern. While I have painstakingly restored the pattern to its original pristine condition, these tiny variations remain and are part of the charm of a historic handcrafted piece.
